WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT ATLANTIS?
Atlantis was recorded in the writings of the famed Greek philosopher Plato around 400 BC.He described an advanced island civilisation that ruled a vast maritime empire.
According to Plato, Atlantis existed some 9,000 years before his own era.
The city of Atlantis at the centre of this empire was described as having, among other features, an enormous harbour wall and huge entrance pillars.
It had a temple to the god Poseidon and massive circular pieces of land carved out by the Atlanteans to live on.
It is thought a cataclysmic natural disaster, such as a tsunami or volcanic event, eventually wiped out the Atlanteans, consigning their legacy to legend.
Where is it? Are there any remaining artifacts that can tell us what it was really like? Who were the Atlanteans? Is it all myth, or is it historical fact?

Doñana National Park
Doñana National Park in Andalusia occupies the right bank of the Guadalquivir river at its estuary on the Atlantic Ocean. It is notable for the great diversity of its biotopes, especially lagoons, marshlands, fixed and mobile dunes, scrub woodland and maquis. It is home to five threatened bird species. It is one of the largest heronries in the Mediterranean region and is the wintering site for more than 500,000 water fowl each year.

The documentary investigates archaeological objects, satellite photographs and sea beds that are supposed to be indications of the mythical island.3
The documentary begins in Santorini, examining the ideas of Charles Pellegrino and continues successively through Malta, to analyze Peter Ellul Vincenti’s proposal, and through Sardinia to assess Robert Ishoy’s proposal, which end up being discarded.
The second part of the documentary begins in the Columns of Hercules, the current Strait of Gibraltar, where the proposal defended by the Cuban writer Díaz-Montexano and the theologian and rabbi Richard A. Freund is examined, which is supported by J. Cameron.
Finally, the documentary explores the Terceira and Pico islands of the Azores archipelago, and concludes considering as more plausible the proposal of the Iberian southwest as the central point from which the Atlantean maritime civilization of the Chalcolithic and Bronze, generator of the legend, would expand, to other parts of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
The documentary pinpoints its ground zero in Doñana National Park, identifying this part of Spain as the great port of Atlantis.

The Pilar of Hercules are near the Doñana National Park and note in Morocco the Mountains are called the ATLAS mountains.

Atlantis (Atlantis) is the name of a mythical island mentioned and described by Plato, which was devastated by earthquakes, giant waves and buried in mud under the sea.
James Cameron has produced an interesting documentary about Atlantis, placing it in the south of Spain, with vestiges of cities belonging to this civilization located in Jaén and Crete. The documentary pinpoints its ground zero in Doñana National Park, identifying this part of Spain as the great port of Atlantis.
An old, twisted branch of an olive tree has shined a light on this catastrophe. It was the largest one in antiquity, covering the entire civilization in mud, and occurring almost 4000 years ago. Rescued from volcanic lava remains, this fossilized olive tree has been able to date this catastrophe between the years 1627 and 1600 BC., all thanks to radiocarbon dating.
The olive branch, which was a witness to the event, was buried during the devastating volcanic eruption that occured at the end of the Bronze Age at the island of Thera (present Santorini, in the Aegean Sea). This eruption caused large tsunamis, and its impact affected large areas of the Mediterranean.
When considering the date, characteristics, the amount of devastation, the location – everything indicates that this was the event that ended the mythical civilization of Atlantis. A civilization which, in addition to its advanced technology and naval capacity of its legendary port, was producing and consuming olive oil.
To ratify this story, we are not fortunate enough to have the testimony of a human witness – such as Pliny the Elder was with the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79 – but we do have a remarkable branch of an olive tree.
Atlantis
The Greek philosopher speaks of the island of Atlantis as a military powerhouse that existed several millennia before its time. Plato placed it beyond the Columns of Hercules (name given to the Strait of Gibraltar).
The power of Atlantis was such that it came to dominate western Europe and northern Africa, until it was stopped by the city of Athens. At that very moment a catastrophe, which is not properly described, made both the island and the rival armies disappear, «in a single day and a terrible night.»

The purpose of this brief work is to give a fast and simple overview of the hypothesis, investigations, contributions and findings related to Atlantis carried out by the author over the last two decades, no matter the level of expertise, focusing particularly on those issues that have been handled – and only briefly explained- by the author in the fascinating documentary, Atlantis Discovered, produced by James Francis Cameron, Yaron Niski y Felix Golubev, and directed by the Canadian award winning filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici for National Geographic.

The official concessionary companies that visit Doñana National Park, Real Fernando and Coop. Marismas del Rocío, are organising a new itinerary that runs through all the ecosystems of Doñana in the same tour, being this the only visit that is performed by boat and four-wheel drive vehicles in Doñana.
The visit starts on the beach of Bajo de Guía, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz). Transfer to Doñana in one of the traditional barges that cross the Guadalquivir River. There, the visitor will start the tour in four-wheel drive vehicles (30Km approx.) to visit the different ecosystems in the interior of Doñana: its vast beach, the famous moving dunes of white sands, the lush pine forests, and the “vera”, which marks the border between the forest and the marsh and where the park´s fauna can be found; and finally the endless plains of the Marsh, a place that hosts thousands of water birds from Central and Northern Europe in winter. The jeep tour finishes in “La Plancha”, a former village of huts where the inhabitants of Doñana used to live. There the boat waits for the visitors to bring them to the last landscape of Doñana and to which it owes its existence: the Guadalquivir River. During the navigation, 30 minutes approximately, the visitor will receive explanations about the river, its banks, its origins, its fauna, etc The tour finishes back at the departure point, the beach of Bajo de Guia, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
The duration of the tour is approximately 2.5 hours. During the tour you will receive explanations by our guides and make short stops at places of interest. Tour in English under previous request only.

The Doñana Biological Station has several webcams that broadcast live from different perspectives, the Spanish Imperial eagle chicks, the Iberian Lynx breeding centre of El Acebuche, the heronry of José A. Valverde and other locations of interest.
Another point of interest in the Doñana Natural Site is the system of fossil dunes of El Asperillo, which runs parallel to the coast between Matalascañas and Mazagón. Once on the beach, you can see the impressive sandstone cliffs , declared a natural monument for their uniqueness and beauty

City of Niebla
capital of the historical county of the same name, this city has a rich heritage that has inherited from very different cultures over the centuries. Its most famous sight are its almohades walls of tartessian origin, the largest walled enclosure of its kind in Europe and the best preserved. The part of the village within the walls has been declared Monumental Historic Site.
Near Niebla we found the dolmens of their prehistoric times, as the so called Soto, and the Neolithic remains of Los Bermejales. The legacy of Rome can also be seen at its famous Roman Bridge (quite restored), and the remains of a church. Visigoth preserved vestiges are the early Christian cathedral, the episcopal chair and ornamental pieces of interest.
Of its Arab past stand out above all the towering walls, as well as its well-preserved gates (Sevilla, Embarcadero, Agua, Buey, Socorro y Agujero) and the mosque, turned into the Church of Granada.
